2. What do I need for my Passenger?

You need a Headset and Headset Extension cord for your passenger, that's minimum requirement for your passenger.  Both headsets need to be either standard stereo, or Noise reducing for both passenger and driver.
That means if you purchase GMRS X1 or FRS X2 noise reducing kit, your passenger will need a noise reducing headset, and a noise reducing headset extension cord.
If you purchase HJC FRS MultiSport or HJC-50 kit, your passenger will need a stereo headset, and a stereo  extension cord.

For HJC-50 standard Tandem pro kit buyer, the HJC-50 kits already come with one regular stereo extension cord for passenger headset extension, Hjc-50 customers need to choose/add stereo typed headsets into the order. As the HJC 50 kit not includes headset.

3a. Any difference between the FRS-X2 and GMRS-X1?

Frs-X2 and Gmrs-X1 communicators both use same battery, same charger, same headset, same extension cord, and same designed body housing.
Distance range and GMRS frequencies are about the only real differences, the best rating on the X2 is 2 miles where the X1 is 5 miles on its GMRS channels.  Your actual range will vary with surrounding conditions.  The X1 (when on GMRS channels ) does use a lot more power then the X2 though to accomplish this.

3b. Can ChatterBox communicators communicate with other "Citizen's Band" CB frequency radios?

No.  The ChatterBox GMRS-X1, FRS-X2, HJC-FRS MultiSport+ communicators are  FRS, or FRS/GMRS frequency radio communicators, and they are not compatible with CB frequency radios.
Gmrs X1 radios can communicate well with other Chatterbox communicators and other Frs or Gmrs frequency handheld radio "such as Motorola FRS handheld radios" on the U.S. market.

Chatterbox also has its own handheld radio transceiver will communicate with Gmrs X1 radios. http://www.mwsbike.com/frs_pro_handheld
If you have someone on the sideline or on anther vehicle to communicate with you, he or she can use a FRS or FRS/GMRS frequency radio.

4. Are the Noise Reduction Headsets worth the extra cost?

chatterbox_noise_reduce_hs_connector_nr.jpg (83624 bytes)The noise reduction headsets are the newest technology and designed to work with the newer X1 & X2 radios (the ones we carry here).  The new NR headsets are the preferred headsets for X-series communicators.  They allow you to communicate at higher speeds and under louder conditions.  You will still adjust VOX setting for slower and faster louder conditions.  Using the push to talk with these is also better, giving you clearer transmission.  If you try and test these headsets without any background noise, you will have the VOX at approximately 12 O'clock position and will have to speak loudly.  These headsets are looking for ambient noise to cancel out and will operate differently when you are riding.

5. Can I use the X1 and X2 or MultiSport communicators as an intercom?

Yes, there is intercom jack for the passenger, on the each communicator.

you need to use matching normal stereo headsets, or noise reducing headsets and matching headset extension cords for passenger's  helmet (same type of headset of rider's headset).

That mean if rider has a X1 or X2 communicator, and rider uses the noise reducing type headset, the passenger needs to have a noise reducing headset and noise reducing headset extension cord.

If you do not use matching headset, your passenger will hear the rider good, but the rider may hear the passenger voice poorly.

6. Can my passenger hear me (rider) and everyone on the channel?

Yes, Passenger can also hear the audio at the same time. Yes there is open or private intercom on HJC-FRS, X2 and X1 units.  Private intercom works the same with the exception that you are not transmitting your talking to other rider or people with radio. And the private intercom mode use lesser power than the normal radio mode, since your radios don't transmit in private intercom mode.

7. What type of headset do I need, open face or full face headsets?

Open face/modular helmets and 3/4 helmets require open face headsets.  You can use either full face or open face headsets on full face helmets.  Modular helmets require open face headsets.

The newer full-face-looking, with the front flip open helmets, like the Shoei Brand "Syncrotec", we strong suggest customers use the open face headset kit, as the full face headset mic wire may not be long enough to let the mic placed on the chin bar.  Click here to go the headset installation page.

8. What the clips that come with the headset for?

The clips are mounted on the side of your helmet. They are used for the headset jack (connector) to wrap through when not in use and to keep the end of the headset cable from coming out of the helmet. Also if using the radios off the helmet you might want to put the connector through one of them, acts as a stress reliever. It does seem preferable to use at least one if you have a headset ext. cord hooked up.

9. How fast can I go and still use the VOX?

That depends on your bike, type of pipes you have, the size of windshield and type of helmet.  Proper use of the mic is very important and using the push to talk button and possibly cable on the highway is very handy.  Using the VOX will take some practice, holding out first and last words slightly.  Click here to read about "Understanding the Voice activation" page.

10. Can I have the VOX set to normal levels and still use the push to talk?

Yes the Push to Talk overrides the VOX.  A lot of times the passengers even operates the push to talk.
Normally, when you use PTT for open/close the microphone, you are advised to set the VOX/PWR at its lowest.

11. Do I have to mount the units on my helmet?

No, it's up to the rider.  Although the Gmrs X1, Frs X2 and Hjc Frs communicator kits come with helmet mounting bracket hardware.  You can order and then use optional headset extension cord to connect the headset and then to your radio.  Your radio can be put on a our optional communicator Belt clip, or leave inside tank bag, placed somewhere different with industrial strength Velcro or even Velcro mounted on your handlebars using a ram mount etc.

12. How long do batteries last?

The HJC-FRS MultiSport units and X2 units radio batteries will pretty much last a day ride with a full charge.  The GMRS  X1 will go about 7-8  hours of constant use (talking) or longer if mostly using just audio and private intercom mode.  Colder temperature will affect battery efficiency.

Using a DC Power Filter on your bike will greatly increase the usability of your radio on trips.  You can charge (plug it in) while stopped, or while riding.  In most cases you can charge while riding.  In some rare cases (with the engine running) the ground loops on certain bikes electrical system may effect the radio transmission.  If this happens just unplug the power filter from your radio at that time.

13. Why my ChatterBox unit's battery charge run out sooner than I first installed it?

All ChatterBox communicators use the Ni-MH typed rechargeable batteries, and Ni-MH batteries tend to have memory effect. (means battery itself forget its full capacity potentials).  Also Ni-MH batteries lose 1-3% charge each day when not being used.

Recommend Ni-MH batteries needs to be re-conditioned after 3-6 months of usage.  To recondition the Ni-MH batteries, you need to fully discharge the power in the batteries (use the batteries until it is fully out of power), and recharge the batteries with the provided AC charger overnight.

To do the recondition process 1-2 times, it could resolve the battery memory effect problems.  To make the discharge process faster, you can leave the FRS MultiSport, X1 and X2 units on and set the VOX sensitivity to high, and place near a running TV or Fm Radio or in a noisy room, until the LOW-BATT-IND indicator up or (for X1, X2 units) its power off itself.

If repeated recondition processes don't resolve the problem, it is the time to order another battery for your unit.  Normally, a ChatterBox Ni-MH battery after its first charging by users, its ability to take charge from charger will last about 18 months-2 years for most riders.

14. Are the Chatterbox units waterproof?

No, they are water resistant from things like moisture but not rain Customers like to put some sort of baggy to protect the unit itself.

15. How does the Audio work on X1, X2 and FRS MultiSport units?

The Audio automatically cuts out when you talk or someone else transmit on your channel.  The Audio automatically comes back when you are finished talking.  Walkman radios work well along with all newer MP3/CD  players.  Some MP3/CD players will often pick up engine noise/frequency, often happen motorcycle battery don't have good ground to the bike frame. To Avoid it try to locate your music player in different spot on you or on your motorcycle.
If you are into motorcycle electrical system stuff, we found a non-profit motorcycle site. The author share a lot useful information about motorcycle repair/adjustment. http://www.cyclemaintenance.com/elec/electrical.htm

Change the location of your MP3/stereo player, in a lot of cases that will take care of it.
You might also get engine noise if you plug both your chatterbox and MP3 player into the 12 Volt power on your bike.  Unplug one of them, the noise will go away. Also not all MP3 players are susceptible to this.

15a. My iPod playback volume is not loud enough while riding.
Is there a way to increase iPod playback music volume?

The standard iPod volume is not loud enough for most people to listen while driving or riding on the roads.
Here is the trick that you can use to increase the output volume.
Major and easy way exist for increasing the iPod volume.
There are advantages and risks to do.

You can increase the volume of the song through iTunes software:
- Open iTunes.
- Select Library.
- Select a song or more songs. (press "Ctrl" key and "A" key together - for selecting all songs.)
- Right click and select "Get Info". (If a prompted to edit multiple items, select Yes)
- Navigate to Volume Adjustment at the bottom.
- Move the arrow upward toward +100%.
- Click OK. (If you select many songs, it may take awhile to process).
- Sync your iPod.
This is an easy way to increase the volume of an individual song or multiple songs. However, this could increase distortion in some songs.

16. Is there any difference between ChatterBox audio cord and the regular stereo walkman type audio cord from Electronic stores?

Yes, there is physical difference between the ChatterBox audio and the regular audio cord. The ChatterBox audio cord is a "coiled" type cord, and built-in antenna, works much better when riding on motorcycle.

The regular flat looking audio cord from electronics stores, can be flopping up and down loosely in the air, and may distract the riders and passengers.  Beside one side of the ChatterBox audio cord' plug is made at 90 degree angle for connecting to the ChatterBox units.

17. I own ChatterBox made stereo headsets (that I used on HJC 50 and FRS MultiSport units), Can I still use the stereo headset on my new Gmrs X1 and FRS X2 communicators?

Yes, the ChatterBox regular stereo headsets can be used and worked on Gmrs X1 and FRS X2 units (hear voice / stereo music, and talk to the mic), BUT the regular stereo headsets can't take advantage of the X1 and X2 noise reducing features. Just remember when you use the regular stereo headsets, you need to get the regular stereo headset extension cords for headset extension.  Also, if you have NR headset, don't use Chatterbox stereo HS extension cord with NR headset.

18. Do the ChatterBox HJC-50 Standard Tandem Pro kits include any headset?

NO, the HJC-50 Standard Tandem pro kits do Not include any headset, customers have to order and choose either a regular stereo open/ full face headset for solo rider's usage. Or choose and order 2 regular stereo open/ full face headsets for both rider and passenger communication.

19. Why I continually hear a hissing/chime sound from the ear-speakers?

The noise is an indicator low charge battery, please recharge the battery.

20. Why my communicator has short transmit range on the roads?

Most probably, your vehicle, motorcycle or ATV, has high voltage leaks, needs resistor spark plugs, metal caps or wires.
